Magic: The Gathering has one of the most valuable and stable vintage card markets in the world. Power 9 cards, original dual lands, and Reserved List cards from Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited editions have appreciated dramatically over two decades. For MTG collectors with high-value cards, CardPawn offers a way to access that value without breaking up a cherished collection.
Why MTG Cards Make Good Collateral
The key factors that make a card good collateral — market liquidity, price transparency, and stable demand — are all present in high-end MTG:
- Reserved List protection: Wizards of the Coast has committed never to reprint Reserved List cards, creating permanent scarcity
- Decades of price history: Alpha Black Lotus, Mox Sapphire, Underground Sea have consistent public sale records from TCGPlayer, Card Kingdom, and major auctions
- Grading standardization: BGS and CGC grade MTG cards with consistent standards

Raw vs Graded MTG Cards
Unlike sports cards, a large portion of the high-end MTG market still trades in raw condition (Near Mint, Lightly Played, etc.) with independently agreed condition assessments. CardPawn accepts raw Power 9 and dual lands from Alpha/Beta/Unlimited with the following:
- Cards must be NM or LP condition (MP and HP accepted at reduced LTV)
- Raw Reserved List cards valued over $5,000 CAD are eligible
- Graded cards (BGS/CGC/PSA) receive 5–10% higher LTV versus comparable raw
Sealed Product
CGC-sealed Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited booster packs and boxes represent some of the most liquid sealed collectibles in the TCG market. CardPawn accepts CGC-authenticated sealed MTG product with LTV ratios of 50–60%.
The Reserved List Advantage
Because Wizards of the Coast has pledged never to reprint Reserved List cards, their scarcity is permanent and guaranteed. This makes them among the most reliable collateral in the entire collectibles market — better than most modern sports cards whose values can be diluted by manufacturer over-production.
Non-Reserved List Modern Cards
Modern MTG cards (non-Reserved List) are generally not accepted as collateral due to reprint risk. Commander Masters, Modern Masters, and similar sets can tank specific card values overnight. Reserved List and Power 9 are the reliable pawn-eligible MTG segment.
